Becoming part of the Wikipedia family

Writing my first own Wikipedia article

First Thoughts and Preparation

When it came to writing my first Wikipedia article, the first question was the subject it should be about. Our requirement was to choose a topic which had to be relevant, liberal arts oriented and there had to be enough literature about it. That led me to check the core principles of Wikipedia again, where notability and verifiability are two important points. For my article I chose the theme of a seminar paper I wrote a semester before, which is a poem of the famous German poet Eduard Mörike: “Der alte Turmhahn. Due to the German content, I wrote my article in German. Checking the relevance, I had a look at the parent page of Eduard Mörike, where the most important works are listed. “Der alte Turmhahn” was mentioned but not further described and therefore I wanted to fill this gap. To verify my words I needed both primary and secondary literature.

My Experience Writing a Wikipedia Article

My contributions to Wikipedia:

I edited the German and English Wikipedia articles on the book: „The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas“ by John Boyne. I chose to edit these articles on this book because it is a novel we discussed at school a few years ago. All in all it was only possible to get to know the names of the actors who performed in the film and who was the director of it.

My Contribution to the Article

I started by writing a summary of the main plot and then turned to the second level of the film, the tableaux vivants, which are equally important. Continue reading “Writing about a Film on Wikipedia”

One topic, two articles

Comparing a German and an English Wikipedia article – Psycholinguistics versus Psycholinguistik

To find out about the differences of German and English articles in general, I picked one topic, which exists in both languages, and compared those two. In some cases, the articles of the English Wikipedia are translated into other languages because the English Wikipedia is the original and the most used Wikipedia in the world. But sometimes there are different articles about the same theme in two different languages. I have therefore chosen the subject of psycholinguistics for my studies.
